मेहमान ख़ाना

मेहमान ख़ाना या बैठक उत्तर भारत, पाकिस्तान व बांग्लादेश के पारम्परिक घरों में वह कमरा होता है जहाँ अतिथियों को बैठाकर उनका सत्कार किया जाता है। इसे संस्कृत में अतिथि कक्ष कहा जाता था। पाकिस्तान व अफ़ग़ानिस्तान के पश्तून इलाक़ों में इसे हुजरा भी कहते हैं। इन कमरों में बैठने के लिए अक्सर मूढ़े और तख़्त / तख़्तपोश रखे होते हैं और व्यवस्था आधुनिक भारतीय शहरों के घरों के 'ड्राइंग रूम' से भिन्न होती है। पश्तून संस्कृति में पश्तून क्षेत्रों में लोग समाज में अपने स्थान को अपने घरों के हुजरों के ठाठ-बाठ से जतलाते हैं। आमतौर पर हुजरों में केवल पुरुष अतिथियों का ही सत्कार किया जाता है और महिला अतिथि घर के अंदरूनी भाग में प्रवेश करके घर की महिलाओं के पास बैठती हैं। कुछ क्षेत्रों में पूरा क़बीला या गाँव ही एक बड़ा हुजरा चलता है जहाँ बाहर से आने वाले महमानों को ठहराया जाता है और हुक्का-चाय दी जाती है।South Asian folklore: an encyclopedia : Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka https://web.archive.org/web/20130921070725/http://books.google.com/books?id=ienxrTPHzzwC 21 सितंबर 2013 , Peter J.
