में सबनगायम नामक एक सरकारी अधिकारी के यहाँ हुआ। वह उनके पाँच बच्चों में सबसे छोटी और अकेली लड़की है। उनकी मां सावित्री ने लड़की को पंडानल्लूर चोकलिंगम पिल्लई, एक प्रसिद्ध भरतनाट्यम गुरु के पास भेजा। उस समय वह केवल चार साल की थी और पिल्लई और उनके बेटे सुब्बाराय पिल्लई के प्रशिक्षण के बाद, उन्होंने 1966 नौ साल की उम्र में अपना पहला मंचन किया। जल्द ही, वह दिल्ली चली गईं, जब उनके पिता का भारतीय
