Most of these Indo-Afghans lost the ability to speak Pashto and instead spoke Hindi and Punjabi.http://www.gatewayhouse.in/kabul-diary-discovering-the-indian-connection/ Kabul Diary: Discovering the Indian connection Krishnamurthy Rajeshwari 28 June 2013 Gateway House: Indian Council on Global Relations en 13 March 2018 Most Afghans in Kabul understand and/or speak Hindi, thanks to the popularity of Indian cinema in the country. जबकि ईरान में रहने वाले पठानों की मातृभाषा दक्षिणी पश्तो और दूसरी भाषा फ़ारसी होती है। पठान जाति की जड़े कहाँ थी इस बात का इतिहासकारों को ज्ञान नहीं लेकिन संस्कृत और यूनानी स्रोतों के अनुसार उनके वर्तमान इलाक़ों में कभी पक्ता नामक जाति रहा करती थी जो संभवतः पठानों के पूर्वज रहें हों। सन् १९७९ के बाद अफ़ग़ानिस्तान में असुरक्षा के कारण जनगणना नहीं हो पाई है लेकिन ऍथनोलॉग के अनुसार पठान की जनसँख्या ५ करोड़ के आसपास अनुमानित की गई है। पठान क़बीलों और ख़ानदानों का भी शुमार करने की कोशिश की गई है और अनुमान लगाया जाता है कि विश्व में लगभग ३५० से ४०० पठान क़बीले और उपक़बीले हैं। पठान जाति अफ़ग़ानिस्तान का सबसे बड़ा समुदाय है।भारत मे कुछ पठान हिन्दू धर्म का पालन भी करते हैं, जो काकोरी क़बीले से तालुक रखते हैं,ये लोग पहले अफ़ग़ानिस्तान से पाकिस्तान में बसे,1947 में बंटवारे के वक़्त इनको भारत का रुख़ करना पड़ा पठान अफ़ग़ानिस्तान के सीमावर्ती क्षेत्रों में रहते हैं और उनका राष्ट्रीय रिवाज बच्चा बाज़ी है विवरण पठान इतिहास 5 हज़ार या 6 हज़ार साल से भी पुराना है और यह अलिखित तरिके से पीढ़ी-दर-पीढ़ी चला आ रहा है। पठान लोक-मान्यता के अनुसार यह जाती 'बनी इस्राएल' यानी यहूदी वंश की है। इस कथा के अनुसार पश्चिमी एशिया में असीरियन साम्राज्य के समय पर लगभग २,८०० साल पहले बनी इस्राएल के दस कबीलों को देश निकाला दे दिया गया था और यही कबीले पठान हैं। बनी इस्राएल होने के बारे में लिखाईयाँ पश्तून लोगों के प्राचीन इस्राएलियों के वंशज होने की अवधारणा पठानों के बनी इस्राएल (अर्थ - इस्रायल की संतान) होने की बात सत्रहवीं सदी ईसवी में जहांगीर के काल में लिखी गयी किताब “मगज़ाने अफ़ग़ानी” में भी मिलती है। अंग्रेज़ लेखक और यात्री अलेक्ज़ेंडर बर्न्स ने अपनी बुख़ारा की यात्राओं के बारे में सन् १८३५ में भी पठानों द्वारा ख़ुद को बनी इस्राएल मानने के बारे में लिखा है। हालांकि पठान ख़ुद को बनी इस्राएल तो कहते हैं लेकिन धार्मिक रूप से वह मुसलमान हैं, यहूदी नहीं। अलेक्ज़ेंडर बर्न ने ही पुनः १८३७ में लिखा कि जब उसने उस समय के अफ़ग़ान राजा दोस्त मोहम्मद से इसके बारे में पूछा तो उसका जवाब था कि उसकी प्रजा बनी इस्राएल है इसमें संदेह नहीं लेकिन इसमें भी संदेह नहीं कि वे लोग मुसलमान हैं एवं आधुनिक यहूदियों का समर्थन नहीं करेंगे। विलियम मूरक्राफ़्ट ने भी १८१९ व १८२५ के बीच भारत, पंजाब और अफ़ग़ानिस्तान समेत कई देशों के यात्रा-वर्णन में लिखा कि पठानों का रंग, नाक-नक़्श, शरीर आदि सभी यहूदियों जैसा है। जे बी फ्रेज़र ने अपनी १८३४ की 'फ़ारस और अफ़ग़ानिस्तान का ऐतिहासिक और वर्णनकारी वृत्तान्त' नामक किताब में कहा कि पठान ख़ुद को बनी इस्राएल मानते हैं और इस्लाम अपनाने से पहले भी उन्होंने अपनी धार्मिक शुद्धता को बरकरार रखा था।An historical and descriptive account of Persia ... including a description of Afghanistan and Beloochistan https://web.archive.org/web/20140924120246/http://books.google.com/books?id=XpQUAAAAQAAJ 24 सितंबर 2014 , James Baillie Fraser, Oliver a.
