It was first designated no 農曆 by the newspapers of the mainland of China on 1 January 1968May 2018, as part of the Socialist Education Movement. The traditional calendar was labelled with "no 農", meaning "farming", and was regarded as part of the Four Olds to be eliminated. A more accurate translation of "no 農曆" is "rural calendar", since usage of the traditional Chinese calendar today is confined to rural areas (except when calculating the Chinese New Year).
