उन्होंने 1977 में पंजाब नैशनल बैंक में प्रबंधन प्रशिक्षु के रूप में कार्यभार ग्रहण किया। पंजाब नैशनल बैंक में 34 साल की अनुकरणीय कैरियर के पश्चात वृहद कॉरपोरेट क्रेडिट, प्राथमिकता प्राप्त क्षेत्र, योजना एवं विकास, वित्तीय समावेशन जैसे मुख्य क्षेत्रों में कार्य करते हुए उनकी अप्रैल, 2011 में केनरा बैंक के कार्यपालक निदेशक के रूप में पदोन्नति हुई। कार्यपालक निदेशक के रूप में श्रीमती भार्गव ने विभिन्न नीतिगत विभागों जैसे अंतर्राष्ट्रीय बैंकिंग, वृहद कॉरपोरेट क्रेडिट, प्राथमिकता प्राप्त क्षेत्र, जोखिम प्रबंधन, निरीक्षण एवं लेखा परीक्षा, सामान्य प्रशासन, वित्तीय प्रबंधन, केनरा बैंक के सभी नौ अनुषंगियों और अन्य विभागों में कार्यनिष्पादन किया। उन्होने विदेश के यू.के में भी कार्य किया और यूरोप, अफ्रीका, अमेरिका और मध्यपूर्व और सूदुर पूर्व एशिया जैसै कई महाद्वीपों की व्यापक रूप से यात्रा की।
