बीजीय फलन

गणित में बीजीय फलन (algebraic function) ऐसे फलनों को कहते हैं जो बहुपद गुणांक वाले बहुपदीय समीकरणों को संतुष्ट करें। उदाहरण के लिये, एक ही चर वाला बीजीय व्यंजक x निम्नलिखित बहुपदीय समीकरण का हल है- यहाँ गुणांक ai(x), x के बहुपदी फलन हैं। इसके विपरीत ऐसे फलन जो बीजीय न हों, अबीजीय फलन (transcendental function) कहलाते हैं। इसी प्रकार n चरों वाला बीजीय फलन वह फलन y है जो n + 1 चरों वाले बहुपदीय समीकरण का हल हो। इतिहास बीजीय फलनों का विचार कम से कम रेने डीकार्टीज के समय का है। बीजीय फलनों पर पहली चर्चा एडवर्ड वेरिंग के "मानव ज्ञान पर एक निबन्ध" (An Essay on the Principles of Human Knowledge) नामक लेख में सन् १७९४ में मिलती है। इस लेख में लेखक कहता है- let a quantity denoting the ordinate, be an algebraic function of the abscissa x, by the common methods of division and extraction of roots, reduce it into an infinite series ascending or descending according to the dimensions of x, and then find the integral of each of the resulting terms. श्रेणी:फलन श्रेणी:बीजगणित
