शून्य समता

thumb|alt=खाली संतुलित तुला|तुला के दोनों वजनी धूपदानों में शून्य वस्तुएँ हैं जो बराबर समूहों में विभक्त करता है। शून्य एक सम संख्या है। अन्य शब्दों में इसकी समता—पूर्णांक का गुणधर्म जो उसका सम अथवा विषम होने का निर्धारण करता है—सम है। इसे सम संख्या सिद्ध करने का सबसे आसान तरिका यह है कि शून्य "सम" होने की परिभाषा में सटीक बैठता है: यह 2 का पूर्ण गुणज है, विशिष्ट रूप से 0 × 2 का मान शून्य प्राप्त होता है। परिणामस्वरूप शून्य में वो सभी गुणधर्म हैं जो एक सम संख्या में पाये जाते हैं: 0, 2 से विभाज्य है, 0 के दोनों ओर विषम संख्याएँ हैं, 0 एक पूर्णांक (0) का स्वयं के साथ योग है और 0 वस्तुओं के एक समुच्चय को दो बराबर समुच्चयों में विपाटित किया जा सकता है। शून्य सम क्यों है "सम संख्या" की मानक परिभाषा के अनुसार शून्य सम है। एक संख्या को "सम" कहा जाता है यदि यह 2 की पूर्ण गुणज हो। उदाहरण के लिए 10 एक सम संख्या है क्योंकि 5 × 2 के बराबर है। इसी प्रकार शून्य भी 2 का पूर्ण गुणज है जिसे 0 × 2, लिखा जा सकता है अतः शून्य सम है।Penner 1999 34: Lemma B.2.2, The integer 0 is even and is not odd.
