गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री माधव सिंह सोलंकी की सरकार द्वारा बख्शी आयोग की सिफारिशों के आधार पर सामाजिक और आर्थिक रूप से पिछड़े जातियों (En:Socially and Economically Backward Casts)(SEBC) के लिए आरक्षण की शुरुआत की। इस कारण राज्य भर में आंदोलन व दंगे हुए जिसमें सौ से अधिक लोगों की मौत हुई। सोलंकी ने 1985 में इस्तीफा दे दिया था, लेकिन बाद में 182 में से 149 सीटें जीतने पर सत्ता में लौट आये। उन्हें क्षत्रिय, हरिजन, आदिवासी और मुसलमान द्वारा समर्थित किया गया; जिसे सामूहिक रूप से खाम सिद्धांत (Ksatriya, Harijan, Adiwasi, Mulsim) कहा गया। परिणाम स्वरुप पाटीदार सम्प्रदाय ने अपना प्रभुत्व खो दिया और में ले लेने के बाद जब माहौल बिगड़ता देखा तो घंटेभर में उसे छोड़ दिया, लेकिन तब तक पटेल समाज के लोग अहमदाबाद व सूरत समेत 12 से ज्यादा शहरों में सड़कों पर उतर आए। तोड़फोड़ व आगजनी भी हुई। सवा सौ गाड़ियों में आग लगा दी व 16 थाने जला दिए गए। ट्रेन की पटरियाँ भी उखाड़ दी गयीं। रात से अहमदाबाद, सूरत, मेहसाणा, ऊंझा, विसनगर में कर्फ्यू लगा दिया गया। 2002 में हुए गुजरात दंगों के बाद ये दूसरा मौका है जब इस प्रकार की हिंसा हुई है। 26 अगस्त को गुजरात बंद का ऐलान किया गया। हार्दिक पटेल, लालजी पटेल और के. डी. शेलडीया जैसे आंदोलनकारीओ की और से गुजरात बंद की घोषणा की गयी है। स्कूल और कॉलेज की छुट्टी कर
