पनडुब्बियों का निर्माण करने के लिए एडवांस्ड टेक्नोलॉजी वेसल (एटीवी) प्रोजेक्ट के तहत बनाया जा रहा है। इस पनडुब्बी में इसके पूर्ववर्ती आईएनएस अरिहंत की तुलना में मिसाइल की संख्या दोगुनी होगी, जिससे इसे और अधिक मिसाइलों को ले जाने की क्षमता मिल जाएगी। इस पनडुब्बी का कोडनेम S3 रखा गया था। पनडुब्बी को मूल रूप से आईएनएस अरिदमन नाम से जाना जाता था लेकिन इसके लॉन्च होने पर इसे आईएनएस अरिघाट नाम दिया गया था। इस पनडुब्बी को 2021 में आई एन एस विक्रांत के साथ सेवा में शामिल किया जाएगा। विवरण पनडुब्बी में एक सात ब्लेड प्रोपेलर होगा जो दबावित जल रिएक्टर द्वारा संचालित होगा। सतह पर यह 12-15 समुद्री मील रही थे तब नौसेना द्वारा बताया गया की पनडुब्बी को 2011 के बीच में लॉन्च किया जायेगा। इस कार्यक्रम में और देरी के कारण अक्टूबर 2017 यह जानकारी आई के इसे नवम्बर या दिसम्बर में लॉन्च किया जायेगा और ये आउटफिटिग में जायेगा। लेकिन 2016 में इसे लॉन्च किया जा चुका था। पांच साल की टेस्टिंग केे बाद 2021 में उसे नौसेना में समलित किया जाएगा। इसे के साथ ही आई एन एस विक्रांत और आई एन एस विशाखापत्तनम को सेना
