मापन के स्तर (levels of measurement) की अवधारणा मनोवैज्ञानिक स्टैनले स्मिथ स्टेवेंस (Stanley Smith Stevens) ने दी थी। सन् १९४६ में आन द थिअरी ऑफ स्केल्स ऑफ मेजरमेंट (On the theory of scales of measurement) नामक एक विज्ञान लेख में उन्होने दावा किया कि विज्ञान में किये जाने वाले सभी मापन चार श्रेणियों में विभक्त किये जा सकते हैं। उन्होने इनके नाम दिये - "nominal", "ordinal", "interval" and "ratio".
