जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्‍वविद्यालय के सेवानिवृत्त प्रोफेसर हैं। इन्होंने जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय में लंबे समय तक समाजशास्‍त्र का अध्ययन और अध्यापन किया है। अकादमिक जीवन आनंद कुमार ने काशी हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय से 1972 में समाजशास्त्र में स्नातकोत्तर उत्तीर्ण किया। 1975 में जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय से समाजशास्त्र में ही एम. फिल. उपाधि अर्जित करने के पश्चात इन्होंने 1986 में शिकागो राजनीतिक रूप से सक्रिय हैं। उनके राजनीतिक जीवन को निम्‍न भागों में बांटा जा सकता है- छात्र राजनीति आनंद कुमार अपने विद्यार्थी जीवन में छात्र राजनीति में सक्रिय रहे। वे एक बार बनारस हिंदू विश्‍वविद्यालय छात्र संघ के अध्‍यक्ष रहे और बाद में प्रकाश करात को हराकर जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्‍वविद्यालय छात्र संघ के अध्‍यक्ष बने। अध्‍यापक राजनीति जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्‍वविद्यालय में समाजशास्‍त्र के अध्‍यापक के तौर पर काम करते हुए प्रो. आनंद कुमार दो बार शिक्षक संघ के अध्‍यक्ष रहे और कई बार महासचिव रहे। इसके अलावा वे केन्‍द्रीय विश्‍वविद्यालयों के शिक्षक संघ के भी अध्‍यक्ष रहे हैं। अन्‍ना आंदोलन और आम आदमी पार्टी प्रो. आनंद कुमार आम आदमी पार्टी के संस्‍थापक सदस्‍य हैं। 2014 के आम चुनावों में इन्होंने उत्तर पूर्वी दिल्ली संसदीय क्षेत्र से आम आदमी पार्टी के प्रत्याशी के तौर पर चुनाव लड़ा और
