Romanian
Etymology
From older ro -ure, from the plurals in la -ora of Latin neuter nouns ending in la -us (such as la tempus, la tempora, ancestor of Romanian ro timp, ro timpuri). Because the final vowel of Latin la -ora was identical in form with the feminine singular ending -a, neuter plural forms ending in -ora were interpreted as feminine; then by analogy with feminine plural forms, the final -a was replaced, first with -e (the feminine plural ending that developed from proto-Romance *-as > *-ai̯ > -e) later with -i (many feminine Romanian nouns such as ro roată have also replaced an original plural in -e with one in -i).Nicolae, Andreea and Scontras, Gregory, 2015. "The Progression of Gender from Latin to Romanian," page 87Maiden, Martin. January 2016. "Ambiguity in Romanian word-structure. The structure of plurals in ...uri" Revue Roumaine de Linguistique 61(1):3-12 Maiden 2016 suggests that, as an alternative to analyzing -uri as a unitary plural suffix, it is also possible to analyze these plurals as ending in a root extension -ur- followed by the plural ending -i.
