Etymology
xvs. Various theories have been posited.
It may reflect a putative pre-form itc-pro *kom-ad-fatā, itself from itc-pro 1 *kom- *ad- *fāōr *fatos.
It may continue ine-pro *ḱóm by, near, with *h₂epó off, away *h₂ep- *dʰh₁tós placed, put 1, perhaps with a meaning "congregated, put together." If this theory is accepted, then the term showcases a similar series of preverbs as in la abscondō to hide, conceal, cover, shroud.99
