Ultimately pt 1. Eduardo de Almeida Navarro Navarro states it is pt tpw *mokaîé 1, indirectly known through the compound tpw mokaîe'yba,+ 583–584 2–1 but Jean de Léry Léry attests the name of the river as unk Mac-he, which, if indeed Tupi, would possibly represent *Makaé or *Maka'e ([ˌma.kəˈ(ʔ)ɛ]), something different from tpw *mokaîé. Léry mentions the river when providing the location of the Goitacás, to whose unattested language the etymology of the word is sometimes attributed.
