Etymology
From the river name fi Kauvatsanjoki, possibly from earlier fi *Kauvaitsenjoki, from the oblique stem of dialectal fi kauvainen, fi kauvanen (standard fi kaukainen distant, far), perhaps named by hunters from Huittinen passing through the area.
