Finnish
fi:
Etymology
fi oulun kylä village, of fi unclear origin (not directly related to fi Oulu). The name may originate as an adaptation of the Swedish name sv Åggelby, perhaps from sv å river + sv glo former sea bay, sv göl pool, lagoon, sv gärde fenced field or sv kulle kulle (kulla) hill + sv by village. However, the name may also be of Finnish origin and be related to the name of the village fi Ohkola in Mäntsälä, although the phonological development appears difficult to reconcile. Yet a third theory even suggests that it derives from fi oulu, the same word as fi Oulu, but this is unlikely, given that evidence for the name containing plosives sv -g- stretches back centuries and due to the distribution of fi oulu (Lapland and Northern Ostrobothnia).
