Etymology
From nds gml vrü̂ntschop, which is an alternation of Middle Low German gml vrü̂ntschap, which itself descends from Old Saxon *friundskap, an unumlauted form of nds osx friundskepi, from nds gem-pro *frijōndskapiz, equivalent to nds Fründ skupp.
The presence or abscence of umlauts in short i-stems in Old Saxon, the raising of /a/ to /ɔ/ in Middle Low German, and the raising of /ɔ/ to /ʊ/ in modern Low German are all subject to dialectal variation.
