Etymology
With metathesis in the weakened ultima from de gml dorp village, from de osx thorp, from de gem-pro *þurpą. While Low German placenames in gml -dorp were generally standardized with the High German equivalent de Dorf -dorf, those with the less transparent variant -trop, -trup often remained unchanged.
