Ukrainian
Etymology 1
uk cu -еньнъ, from cu енъ + cu -ьнъ. Originally used to form adjectives from past passive participles in Old Church Slavonic, later reinterpreted as a past passive participle suffix within the Russian literary language. Compare the native past participle suffix uk -єний 1, which developed into an adjective suffix. For the same development compare uk -ячий. Reanalyzed as uk -є -нний.

Suffix
uk suffix adjective-forming suffixes participle-forming suffixes feminine -єнна variant -енний
used to form past passive participles from verbs in uk -їти and uk -яти, which are frequently lexicalized into adjectives
uk проща́ти to forgive непроще́нний unforgiven, unforgivable
Usage notes
As a means of forming past passive participles, the suffix as written occurs mostly unstressed; when stressed, it assumes the form uk -енний. Generally, this suffix occurs with accent-a verbs (stem-stressed verbs ending in unstressed uk -їти and uk -яти) and accent-c verbs (ending-stressed verbs in uk -ї́ти and uk -я́ти, where the present and synthetic future tense, except for the first person singular, are stem-stressed, for example uk води́ти with present tense uk воджу́, uk во́диш, uk во́дить, etc.). It does not normally occur with accent-b verbs (ending-stressed verbs where the entire present and synthetic future tense is ending-stressed, for example uk вини́ти with present tense uk виню́, uk вини́ш, uk вини́ть, etc.), which instead use uk -е́нний. However, there are exceptions in both directions, e.g. accent-c uk діли́ти (present tense uk ділю́, uk ді́лиш) with past passive participle uk неподіле́нний and accent-b uk кро́їти (present tense uk крою́, uk кро́їш) with past passive participle uk невикрої́нний.
This suffix triggers iotation (unlike the homophonous adjective-forming suffix below).
