English
Etymology
en la-med Gasconia, from en la-vul Wasconia, from en la Vasconia, from la Vascones + la -ia, from en grc Οὐάσκωνες attested in Strabo's 1st-century Geographica, Book III,Larry Trask, The History of Basque Routledge: 1997 0-415-13116-2 variously derived from grc αἴξ goat (literally “he-goat people”) or a variant of en Ausci (perhaps related to en Euskara). Cognate with en Basque, en Gascon, and en Vascon. Equivalent to en Gascon y.
For sound changes: /w/ → /v/ occurred in the change from Latin to Proto-Romance, while /w/ → /g/ (in loan words starting with /w/) common in (non-Iberian) Romance languages, notably French; compare en warranty and en guarantee, en William and en Guillaume. By contrast, /v/ developed into /b/ and /β̞/ in Spanish and Gascon (Spanish es Vasco, /ˈbasko/), hence the divergence.
