German
Etymology
From de gmh mūlwurf, gmh mūlwerf, which is composed of gmh mūl mouth (see de Maul) and gmh wurf throwing (see de werfen).
This is a folk etymological reinterpretation of the earlier term gmh moltwerf, from late de goh mul(t)wurf, which actually meant "earth(up)thrower," the first element from goh molta earth, dust (see de Molte). Thus, the original word referred to the mole as a creature that throws up piles of earth. More at en mouldwarp.
