Etymology
A lexicalized use of the calendar date 17. mai (“17 May”), read aloud as nb syttende mai the seventeenth of May.
The date refers to 17 May 1814 at Eidsvoll. The Norwegian Constitution had been unanimously adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 16 May; on the following day it was dated and signed by the presidency, and Prince Christian Frederick of Norway Christian Frederik was elected king of an independent Norway. The date consequently became a symbol of the Constitution and of Norwegian political independence.
Commemorations began in the years following 1814 and became increasingly politically significant during the union with Sweden. King Charles XIV John Karl Johan opposed the celebrations during the 1820s, and the conflict surrounding the observance contributed to the Battle of the Square Torgslaget in 1829. In 1836 the Storting itself held a 17 May celebration, after which the date may be regarded as established as Norway's national day. Public processions became common after Karl Johan's death in 1844, and the modern children's-parade tradition developed from school processions in 1869 and 1870.
