Etymology
la ine-pro *dyew-
la itc-ola - from la itc-pro *djous *djous, *djowes day, sky; Jove from la ine-pro *dyḗws sky god the bright one from ine-pro *dyew- to be bright, day sky. Combining the root with the title la pater Pater Father forms itc-ola Diēspiter Jupiter Father Jove whence the nominative and vocative of later forms of Dijovis are derived by analogous formation (cf. la Iuppiter, la Iovis). Related to la diēs, la dīvus, la dīus, la Diāna, la deus. Cognates include grc-dor Δεύς, grc-att Ζεύς—the Greek god to whom Roman Dijovis is later equated.
