thumb|Europe highlighted on a globe.
nb; borrowed from nb la Eurōpa, from nb grc Εὐρώπη Eurṓpē, used in Ancient Greek both as a geographical name and as the name of a mythological figure. The ultimate origin is uncertain and probably Pre-Greek. The geographical and mythological uses may ultimately represent the same name, but a direct historical connection between them has not been established. The traditional interpretation of the mythological name as grc εὐρύς wide, broad + grc ὤψ eye, face is uncertain, as are proposed connections with Semitic words meaning “evening” or “west”.

thumb|Europa on the back of Zeus in the form of a bull, in a fresco from Pompeii.

thumb|A three-dimensional shape model of the asteroid 52 Europa.
nb; ultimately from nb la Eurōpa Europa, from nb grc Εὐρώπα Europa, probably from nb qsb-grc -.
Beekes (2004) regards the mythological Europa as an old supernatural figure of probably Pre-Greek date and considers her association with Phoenicia secondary. The original meaning of the name is unknown.
The astronomical names are eponyms of the mythological figure. Simon Marius proposed the name for Jupiter's moon in 1614, following a suggestion by Johannes Kepler to name the Galilean moons after mythological figures associated with Jupiter. The asteroid 52 Europa, discovered by Hermann Goldschmidt on 4 February 1858, was likewise named after her.
