Diminutive in lb -chen of lb gmh nahtigal nahtigal(e), from lb goh nahtigala, from lb gmw-pro *nahtigalā. The unexpected diphthong perhaps through association with the verb lb geilen to mock, from gmh gīlen. The song of the nightingale can sound a bit like laughter.
