hausen Hausen hāu-seⁿ
German
de:Hausen (Ortsname)
Alternative forms
de -sen -husen northern Germany, latter rare in official names
Etymology
From de gmh hūsen -hūsen, from de goh hūsum -hūsum, dative plural of goh hūs house. It is found in native High German placenames as well as in adapted forms of originally Low German or Frisian placenames.
Pronunciation
de /ˈhaʊ̯zən/ /ˌhaʊ̯zən/
As with several other placename suffixes (e.g. de -hagen, de -hofen, de -kirchen) it is unpredictable whether de -hausen takes primary stress or not. It predominantly does when the name has four or more syllables (but not universally, cf. de Oberhausen).
