Etymology
In at least Southern Savonia probably from fi höylä as an occupational surname. However, if originally from Karelia, vernacular forms of the fi ru - name ru Феофил also come into question. Furthermore, in Western Finland, the form fi Höylä may have developed by syncope from fi Höytölä in regions where the weak grade of t was a l; this place name may be equivalent to fi 1 höyty lä toponym.
