Latin
Etymology
Perhaps la Sabus īnus (but compare osc 𐌔𐌀𐌚𐌉𐌍𐌉𐌌, pointing to la itc-pro *saβ-īn-itc-pro); further la 1. The name is said to mean of one's own, from la ine-pro *sebʰ-, ine-pro *swebʰ- one's own (compare the reflexive pronoun ine-pro *swé, dative ine-pro *s(w)ebʰi(o), whence la sibi)Shipley, The Origins of English Words: A Discursive Dictionary of Indo-European Roots with the attributive suffix ine-pro *-iHnos, but the /a/ phoneme and uncertainties about the root render this suspect. Compare also the Germanic tribe name la Suēbī.
