First attested as mydhusum in 1491. nl fy Grut Midhuzen, derived from fy grut great, big and a compound of nl ofs mid mid-, middle and the plural form of ofs hūs house. The element nl groot was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Klein Medhuizen.
