heit
German
Alternative forms
de -keit
Etymology
de :inh gmh:-heit<ety:inh<goh:-heit<ety:inh<gmw-pro:*-haidu>>>>
From de gmh -heit, from de goh -heit, from de gmw-pro *-haidu, ultimately from de gem-pro *haiduz personality, character, manner, way.22 -heit. Cognate with nl -heid, en -hood, da -hed.
Pronunciation
de /-haɪ̯t/ [haɪ̯t]
The suffix has secondary stress when it follows an unstressed syllable and often also when it precedes one. When it is entirely unstressed, the /h/ may be unpronounced in common speech.
de De--heit.ogg <<Germany>> (<<Berlin>>)
Suffix
f
Converts an adjective into a noun and usually denotes an abstract quality of the adjectival root. It is often equivalent to the English suffixes -ness, -th, -ity, -dom:
de schön beautiful Schönheit beauty
de neu new Neuheit novelty
Converts concrete nouns into abstract nouns:
de Kind child Kindheit childhood
de Christ Christian Christenheit Christendom
Usage notes
While de -heit is the normal form of this suffix, it becomes de -keit after certain adjectival suffixes. These are de -bar, de -ig, de -isch, de -lich, de -sam. For example: de nützlich useful Nützlichkeit utility.
Adjectives ending in unstressed de -el, -er usually take de -keit as well: de eitel vain Eitelkeit vanity, de mager meagre Magerkeit meagreness. However, there are a handful of exceptions, e.g. de Dunkelheit darkness, de Sicherheit safety.
Sometimes de -ig -ig- is added to the adjective and the suffix thus becomes de -keit. This is the general rule with adjectives in de -haft and de -los: de fehlerhaft faulty Fehlerhaftigkeit faultiness. There is also a fairly large number of other adjectives that follow this pattern: de müde tired Müdigkeit tiredness. Two forms may exist for some adjectives, occasionally with a semantic distinction, e.g. de Neuheit novelty versus de Neuigkeit news.
