olus Oluş
Latin
la -ulus
Pronunciation
-olus stressed on the antepenult
Suffix
-olus
la -ulus
Usage notes
This allomorph of the Latin diminutive suffix is used instead of la -ulus whenever the preceding letter is i or e, and sometimes used when the preceding letter is u/v. (After a preceding v or u, variation in Latin spelling between the letter u and the letter o is not specific to this suffix, but is generally found for the short back rounded vowel derived from raising of original o: compare la volt/la vult and la servom/la servum). Thus, nouns or adjectives ending in la -ius, -ia, -ium form diminutives in la -iolus, -iola, -iolum; nouns or adjectives ending in la -eus, -ea, -eum form diminutives in la -eolus, -eola, -eolum; and nouns or adjectives ending in la -vus, -va, -vum (or la -uus, -ua, -uum) may form diminutives in la -volus, -vola, -volum (la -uolus, -uola, -uolum).
Examples:
la fīlius son fīliolus young son
la linteum linen cloth linteolum small linen cloth
la scaeva left Scaevola Lefty (proper name)
la aqua water aquola (also spelled la aquula, la acula)
