Etymology
From fi kannus spur spur. As a place name, fi kannus spur has often been used to refer a smaller island next to another island or a peninsula, and the town in Central Ostrobothnia likely also refers to such (now within the nearby municipality of Lohtaja, later Kokkola). As a surname, probably originally a byname/nickname, or from place names.
