Etymology 1
15th century, from de gml hakke, from de gem-pro *hak(k)-, perhaps related to gem-pro *hakô. Cognate with nl hak. The word also existed in goh - as goh hakka animal heel, but this had no attested continuation in Middle High German.

de Ferse
Usage notes
There is now a tendency to use de Hacke especially for the back of the shoe (i.e. that part which is around the heel of the foot), whereas the body part is more often called de Ferse even in the north. Such use may include or exclude the sole of a high-heeled shoe (de Absatz). In the south the word is rare in either sense.
