Etymology
From Proto-Bodish *tʰʲuŋ (“short, small”). Cognate to Dzongkha ཆུང་ཀུ (chung ku, “small”) and Kurtöp ཐིང་ཀུ (thingku, “short”).
Compare Sino-Tibetan ཆུང (chung) and Chinese Mandarin 小 (xiǎo).
Pronunciation
kix /-tsʰoʊ³¹/
Suffix
kix suffix
kix Patsho A diminutive suffix attached to nouns to indicate small size, endearment, triviality, or reduced intensity. It is the semantic opposite of the augmentative suffix -nyù.
kix Jüsü oh heutshou nü kou tü jü-i louhshi, heu ashong nü kou oh i-louh je We stopped to irrigate from the small brook, but got the source from the main river.
kix Chikheunyoh tsak yohtshou hoi nü sheuh yohnyu nütah khikhikü kuatiejün nü tah monglingkü thap nye The farmer smiled at the piglets scurrying around its mother
Usage notes
Unlike -nyù, which can mark either augmentative size or female animals, -tshòu has no role in marking sex or gender. It is purely diminutive. To specify a male animal, the separate marker pong is used (e.g., yoh pong “male pig”); the diminutive suffix may combine freely:
yoh pong tshòu small male pig
yoh nyù tshòu small female pig
heu river, stream + -tshòu → heu tshòu small stream, brook
jam house + -tshòu → jam tshòu small house, hut
yoh pig + -tshòu → yoh tshòu small pig, piglet (unmarked for sex)
The suffix does not carry pejorative force by default but may imply affection or triviality depending on context. It is the standard means of forming diminutives across nouns for objects, places, and animals.
