stau štau
German
Etymology
de ine-pro *steh₂-
18th century, from de nds Stau, from de gml stouw, gml stouwe weir, probably a de 1 from gml stouwen to stop, dam, from de osx *stōwa, from de gmw-pro *stōu, ultimately derived from de gem-pro *stōō place. Cognate with nl stuw.
Alternatively the Dutch and Low German forms could be inherited from the Germanic noun (like en stow), but the sense makes a new deverbal derivation more likely.
