English
Etymology
From en fro als gernons having mustaches, from fro als (contraction of fro a and fro les) + fro gernon, variant of fro grenon mustache, from en la-vul *granonem facial hair, mustache, from en gem-pro *granō awn, beard-hair, hair-tips, mustache, related to goh grana, ang granu mustache, non grǫn mustache, (upper) lip, ang granu mustache.
Mustaches were often a prominent cultural component for men of some early medieval Germanic societies (contrary to popular culture, beards were uncommon), whence the name originates from. However, the particular distinction owing this name vis-a-vis other families is unclear.
Proper noun
en male French.
