Originally for the river, from fi suonen- joki river. The initial component has been folk-etymologically reinterpreted as fi suoni, but is rather from an earlier fi *Suonteenjoki, which may however be a derivation from fi suoni (fi *suonne : *suontee-, compare fi Suontee), or otherwise of the same origin as fi Suontee (see it for more).
