Referenced in Latin by Willibrord as a river in Texandria (roughly, Brabant and its vicinity) by the name la Duthmala (727 CE). Elsewhere it is attested as la Dutmala around the same time. The second element is nl odt mala dale, lowland (found in placenames, compare nl Ezemaal, nl Watermaal, etc.); the first is uncertain. nl
