Etymology
From de gml venne, from de osx fenni, from de gmw-pro *fani, from de gem-pro *fanją.
The word did exist in High German (de goh fenni), but de gmh venne is rare and the word was later lost in Upper German and most dialects of Central German. The modern form is therefore based chiefly on the Low German lineage.
Cognate with nl veen, wa fagne (also wa fa and wa fwè, both only in toponymy) and fr fange.
