Etymology
Probably related to nn gjeva give. The last part is nn vatn water, lake. Known in old Danicized forms as Gevilvandet or Djevilvandet. The last one may be explained as example of folk etymology, which connects lake's name to devil (nn djevel), what is also the reason behind the humorous sense of the word.
