Etymology
From the compound stem Svork- of the river name nb Svorka and nb sjøen the lake. The origin of nb Svorka is uncertain. Peter Andreas Munch connected the name group with a reconstructed Norwegian verb *svirka, corresponding to Proto-Germanic gem-pro *swerkaną to become dark, reflected in Old English ang sweorcan to become dark, be obscured. If this explanation is correct, the river name would have meant approximately “the dark one”.
