Although the Lex Salica was written during the reign of Clovis in the early sixth century, we only have the text in later copies, dating from the eighth and ninth centuries. One notable version is the edition containing the Malberg glosses from the eighth century. This includes Frankish words and phrases, which are inserted into the manuscript text with the abbreviation 'mall.' or 'malb.', which is short for 'mallobergo', meaning 'in court', and which reflect the foreign terms commonly used in court proceedings.
[...] a corpus of glosses from the ninth century; the Malberg glosses on the Lex Salica. The latter is a Latin legal text dating from the time of King Clovis (sixth century), known only from manuscripts dating from the ninth century onwards. [...] The tradition of the Lex Salica includes a variant in which the main Latin text is accompanied by Frankish glosses. This textual variant is known as the Malberg glosses, named after the Latinised form (in) mallobergo used in the manuscript itself, which means '(on) the court hill', referring to the sacred place where the Germanic peoples administered justice.
