Etymology
fi Lappi Lapin lahti bay gen Sami, Lapp bay. As a name for the municipality, in reference to the historical Sami population in the area; for the quarter in Helsinki, the name could have also been used as a (disparaging) way to refer to Finns who lived 'like the Sami', i.e. a nomadic lifestyle.
