diele
German
Etymology
From de gmh dille, from de goh dilla, from de gem-pro *þiljǭ. More at en thill.
The sense “hallway” is from de gml dēle and its de nds-de - descendants. The form, Diele, likewise seems influenced by Low German (although it could stem from an attested Middle High German variant gmh dile). Cognate with nl deel f.

Usage notes
A Diele is a hallway in a private residence, as is de Korridor. Another synonym is de Flur, but this can also mean the stairwell of an apartment house.
If an apartment has a foyer and then a separate hallway branching off from it, only the foyer will be called Diele and the hallway will be called de Flur, de Gang, de Korridor.
