-ttä tta
Finnish
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
fi abessive
From fi urj-fin-pro *-tta abessive, from fi urj-pro *-pta.
Suffix
case ttä
Marks the abessive case: without
Usage notes
Suffixed to the genitive stem in the singular, to the same stem as the inessive in the plural.
Not very commonly used outside of set phrases, especially the singular forms. The only abessive forms still in general use are abessive forms of the third infinitive.
See the appendix on Finnish nominal cases for more information on how the abessive case is used.
Synonyms
without fi ilman + partitive, preposition, fi vailla + partitive, preposition
Derived terms
fi -ti caritive has developed into the general abessive case suffix in most Nyland and South Tavastian dialects

Etymology 2
fi partitive
Derived from the assimilated final consonant of the stem, *k or *h, plus the partitive suffix fi -ta partitive.
Suffix
case ttä
fi -ta partitive partitive case ending
Usage notes
Used predominantly for words whose nominative singular ends in fi -e and which lengthen that final fi -e in other singular cases, as well as for ordinal numerals starting from kolmas. Traditionally also for fi ori.
See the appendix on Finnish nominal cases for more information on how the partitive case is used.
Etymology 3
fi adverbial
From fi urj-fin-pro *-tta adverbial, from fi urj-fpr-pro *-kta.
Suffix
adverb ttä
Forms certain adverbs, typically of manner.
Derived terms
fi adverbial

Etymology 4
fi nominal
Probably re-extracted from fi navetta, fi karjetta, fi ometta, which may derive from contractions of fi aitta, which may contain an actual fi -tta suffix. Apart from it, this suffix is not found in any of the other Finnic languages.
Suffix
noun ttä fi rare
Forms some nouns, generally for places.
Usage notes
Suffixed to the weak stem and appears to cause the final fi -a- to change to fi -e- in the same way as fi -mpi, fi -ella, fi -ntaa, fi -eta do. This may, however, be a gap in data, as fi karjetta and fi ometta may both be formed analogously to fi navetta, and the suffix fi -tto (which is derived from fi -tta) does not appear to exhibit this behavior.
Derived terms
fi nominal
fi -tto
