Etymology
From the surname of Ernst Röhm (then-leader of the Sturmabteilung SA) + de Putsch, thus “Röhm coup”. Originally a propaganda term as Röhm was falsely accused of having planned a coup against Hitler. Nevertheless it remains the most usual term in German, now often being reinterpreted as Hitler’s coup against Röhm and the SA.
