Alternative forms
nb Luxemburg equally standard spelling for the country and its capital
Etymology
nb, based on nb fr Luxembourg and nb de Luxemburg. Both forms ultimately continue nb gmh Luccelemburc, from nb goh Lucilinburhuc, first recorded in a Latin deed from 963 and traditionally interpreted as “little castle”, from goh luzil little and goh burg castle, fortress.
The name originally referred to the castle and the settlement that developed around it, and was later extended to the surrounding territory. The modern country, its capital, the Belgian province and the canton ultimately derive their names from this place-name.
Parallel international adaptations include da Luxembourg, sv Luxemburg, de Luxemburg, fr Luxembourg, nl Luxemburg and is Lúxemborg Luxembourg.
