From de gmh iltis, from de goh illitiso, illintiso, of de 1 origin.
Perhaps a compound from the de ine-pro - roots ine-pro *h₁el- red, brown and ine-pro *weys- to flow, run. The latter was probably used for animal secretions, whence the noun ine-pro *wiso- or ine-pro *wisós fluidity, slime, reek, poison, as in de Wiesel and de Wisent; compare grc ἰός and la virus.
