Etymology
nb, ultimately from nb la Ganymēdēs Ganymede, from nb grc Γανυμήδης Ganymede. The Ancient Greek name was already interpreted in antiquity as being connected with grc γάνυμαι to rejoice, be glad and grc μήδεα plans, thoughts, counsel, an interpretation implied by Socrates in Xenophon's Symposium (8.29–30); the actual formation of the name is not certain.
The astronomical name is an eponym of the mythological figure. The moon was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Simon Marius proposed the name Ganymedes in 1614, one of four names suggested to him by Johannes Kepler for Jupiter's Galilean moons.
