Etymology
From a medieval Karelian spoken form of the fi ru - given name ru Прокопий, originally as an anthroponym. The town could have been named after this through a family name by early settlers, or used by the owners of hunting grounds once located in the same region. 1549 as fi Coopianiemi (modern spelling fi Kuopionniemi, the original name of the peninsula that the city was founded on).
